Stop and think: who is trying to use the healthcare system for their purposes here, suggesting a bond of shared responsibility between speaker and audience?
Universal access to healthcare rightfully is a point of national pride, but that doesn't mean there should be no accountability. Rather than being an orphan left in the care of the nation, we have in fact elected representatives to look after it - our government!
A thought experiment: imagine that in 2020, "our NHS" failed to provide adequate PPE to frontline healthcare and support workers, and was slow to provide and build up diagnostic testing capacity.
One might reasonably argue that there were institutional shortcomings, yet individual NHS staff took admirable care of patients under difficult conditions sometimes putting themselves at risk.
Is it really the institution we should be grateful to, rather than the individuals doing the work?
Another example: waiting lists, a feature of "our NHS". Should we pledge allegiance to those?
